- Study Elder Gary E. Stevenson’s April 8, 2021 BYU-Idaho commencement address, “Fear and Uncertainty vs. Faith and Hope”
- Struggled greatly in the MTC to learn Japanese. Began studying from 4-6:00 a.m. before the other missionaries were awake. It wasn’t until he shifted his prayers to be less focused on himself and he included more study of the Book of Mormon, not just Japanese, in that 2-hr block that he saw improvement with the language.
- “Let me go back to my time at the MTC in Hawaii. What was done to overcome the paralyzing fear of not being able to succeed on my mission because I would not be able to learn Japanese? I’m not exactly sure how it happened. It was a process. I recall after completing nearly half my time at the MTC, something changed. I remember adjusting the 4 to 6 a.m. study time each morning to include more time reading and studying the Book of Mormon rather than only studying Japanese. Perhaps adjusting my prayers so to be not so focused solely upon myself. I knew my mission assignment was from the Lord, and so I determined that I would do my best and put myself in the hands of the Lord. I quit worrying about how well others were doing. I set goals for myself, and I started achieving them. Fear and uncertainty subsided. Faith and hope filled its place. This resulted in the study of Japanese developing into a passion with great enjoyment. Ultimately, I have spent nine years of my life in Japan, for which I am so deeply grateful. Well, finally, let me speak for a moment on the realities of mortality. As we work to move forward with faith and hope, there will be failures. You are going to take a few scrapes and bruises. There will be dark patches on the road ahead. But you are sons and daughters of God. As such, you have an inexhaustible divine source of strength burning inside of you. ‘For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of a sound mind. Wherefore, be of good cheer and do not fear, for I the Lord am with you and will stand by you.’ The Lord’s promise to us is certain. ‘He that endureth in faith and doeth my will, the same shall overcome.’ There is always hope. Let the knowledge of who you truly are and who is on your side extinguish all of your fears. I pray and offer my testimony and witness of Jesus Christ as our Savior and Redeemer. And I do so in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.”
- Discussing failure, Elder Stevenson quoted President Thomas S. Monson‘s 2003 BYU commencement address, “Doubt Not, Fear Not” where he listed several prominent people who “rejected rejection” in their early pursuits: poet Robert Frost, physicist Albert Einstein, and statesman Winston Churchill.
- Elder Stevenson developing a passion for something that had once been a frustrating weakness reminds me of Dr. Barbara Oakley. She was terrible at quantitative subjects but eventually found a way to understand them that worked for her. She became a math professor and is best known for her free Coursera class “Learning How to Learn” which today has over 4,000,000 people enrolled. She’s also written multiple books, including, A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel At Math And Science (Even if You Flunked Algebra) and Mindshift: Break Through Obstacles to Learning and Discover Your Hidden Potential
- Elder Stevenson finding success from putting the gospel first reminded me of Dr. Ray Smith, former director of BYU’s Synthesis Jazz Band. In His 2009 BYU devotional, “Depending on the Lord: Gospel Insights from a Musician” he talked about how he made the scary decision as a music student to not practice his instrument on Sundays. It ended up making all the difference and he improved much quicker.
- Study the Book of Mormon daily
- Study Preach My Gospel (especially chapters 4, 6, 8)
- Set goals and make plans similar to how I did as a missionary

- I will start a murmur log to keep track of how many times I complain each week. (See General Conference Applied S5 E29)
- I will write my testimony of the Book of Mormon and store it someplace where I can read it “as [I] face [my] individual times of testing.” (Elder S. Mark Palmer, “‘Return unto Me … That I May Heal You’“, April 2025 General Conference; General Conference Applied S5 E24, General Conference Applied S5 E33)

- Invitation: “The only permanent solution to the differences that divide us is for all of us to follow our Savior’s teachings and to gradually become even as He is. Following Christ is not a casual or occasional practice, but a continuous commitment and way of life that applies to all persons at all times and in all places.”
- Application Idea: Continually study the words of Jesus. Make it routine, but not shallow.
- Invitation: Develop Christlike attributes such as humility, obedience, repentance, and love.
- Application Idea: study Preach My Gospel chapter 6.
- Invitation: frequently attend the temple and keep our temple covenants to “gain greater access to the Lord’s strengthening power. In the temple, we receive protection from the buffetings of the world.”
- Application Idea: Schedule your temple worship. Keep your appointments.
- Invitation: Become true disciples through charitable outward service and inner transformation
- Application Idea: Set goals and make plans to do both. If you’re feeling like Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree, giving of yourself until there’s nothing left, maybe you are imbalanced and need to let others help while you allow yourself more time for study and devotion and prayer. If you’re constantly in the books, have good prayers, and often make it to the temple, but haven’t done service for the living recently, make an adjustment.
- Invitation: “The only permanent solution to the differences that divide us is for all of us to follow our Savior’s teachings and to gradually become even as He is. - Invitation: “‘If you want to get revelation, do your homework.’ Those were the wise and loving words President Harold B. Lee once shared with me when I was earnestly seeking to understand how to receive answers to my prayers. … When I seek guidance from the Lord, I often begin by asking in prayer, ‘Heavenly Father, is this what the Lord would have me do?’ And then, I will wait upon Him until I know. Then I might say, ‘Please, while I am working at it, can I remember that I am doing it for the Lord?’ I promise you that if you will be patient and diligent, you will have a blessing come to you that you will know that you are doing what the Lord would have you do. He will answer your prayers for help beyond your human understanding.”
- Application Idea: Follow President Eyring’s pattern. Identify a question for which you need divine guidance. Kneel down and ask your Heavenly Father in prayer. Wait until an answer comes. Write down what He tells you to do. Throughout the process, make sure to focus on Jesus Christ.

- Invitations: Never run away from who you are—a child of God. Do not minimize the eternal light God put in your soul.
- “In our present day, tremendously difficult issues face any disciple of Jesus Christ. We might sometimes want to run away from where we are, but we certainly should never run away from who we are—children of the living God who loves us, who is always ready to forgive us, and who will never, ever forsake us. You are His most precious possession. You are His child, to whom He has given prophets and promises, spiritual gifts and revelations, miracles and messages, and angels on both sides of the veil. In a world that so desperately needs all the light it can get, please do not minimize the eternal light God put in your soul before this world was.”
- Application Idea: If the concern is running from God and minimizing our light, find ways to do the opposite—run toward Him and allow Him to brighten our light by spending time with Him in prayer, studying His words, and frequently visiting the House of the Lord.

- Invitations: Study D&C 64:29, 33-34 with President Holland. Understand that you’re the Lord’s agent on His business which business is the most certain undertaking that exists. Don’t be weary in well-doing. Give the Lord your heart. Give the Lord your mind. Study as much in the scriptures or the words of the prophets as you watch TV or study for school.
- D&C 64:29, 33-34 “Wherefore, as ye are agents, ye are on the Lord’s errand; and whatever ye do according to the will of the Lord is the Lord’s business. . . . Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great. Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind; and the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land of Zion in these last days.”
- “Your mission is sure and it won’t fail. But all things must come to pass in their time…. Be not weary in well-doing…. As little as that may seem to you, do not be weary in doing that. Because you’re laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great. You think you’re small. You think the business is small…. [that] nothing you’re doing matters much…. [that it] doesn’t accomplish much. Well, it does. That’s how every great work has been built. And you’re agents of the Lord’s business, which is the most sure business in the world. It’s the most certain undertaking ever made, really, in this last and greatest of all dispensations. It’s greater than any other dispensation. Now then verse 34, ‘behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind and the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land of Zion in these last days.’ Love it. Guaranteed success. Give the Lord your heart. Give the Lord your mind. Study as much in the scriptures or the words of the prophets … as you watch TV or … study for school.”
- Application Idea: Study that scripture passage along with President Holland’s video. Consider what He has asked you to do that you might be tempted to grumble about on occasion. Pray for help to fix your attitude and glimpse His bigger strategic vision.

- Invitations: “The trek Latter-day Saint pioneers made to Utah exemplifies the faith, courage, and determination of those truly devoted disciples of Jesus Christ. We certainly owe it to those pioneers to remember their stories, traditions, values, struggles, testimonies, and contributions. But even more importantly, we must remember the Savior and His Atonement, keeping covenants with God, repenting, and enduring through life’s challenges and hardships. May the pioneers of the past inspire us today to rely on Jesus Christ ‘at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in’ (Mosiah 18:9).”
- Application Idea: Learn our pioneer ancestors’ conversion stories and any positive moments of them boldly acting in faith in Christ. Use their life experiences to point us and our families to the Savior.

For the Strength of Youth
- “Answers from an Apostle: What Does It Mean to Love Others as the Savior Loves Me?”
- Invitation: “To love as Christ loved—’as I have loved you’—is to love the Father best of all, to obey Him to the end, and therein find the divine motivation to love our neighbors as ourselves.”
- “‘A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.’ What the Savior, the Master Teacher, did was divide that one great commandment to love into two components. Yes, they were to love one another, but Christ taught that would be possible in the fullest degree only by loving God first. Thus, He could speak of the great commandment as the two great commandments, neither part of which would be complete without the other.”
- Application Idea: Take a personal inventory of what or whom you love most. Make adjustments as needed.
- Invitation: While preaching about charity, Joseph Smith taught, “You must enlarge your souls towards each other, if you would do like Jesus. … [You] must bear with each other’s failings, as an indulgent parent bears with the foibles of his children.… Let your hearts expand, let them be enlarged towards others; you must be long-suffering, and bear with the faults and errors of mankind. How precious are the souls of men!”
- Application Idea: Ponder and apply the golden rule of treating others the way you hope they’ll treat you. Realize you are not perfect and that as much as certain people may get on our nerves, others may feel the same about us. But if we’re following Joseph’s counsel, we’ll all practice enough patience and love that it won’t matter.
- Invitation: “You may not be asked to lay down your lives as [Joseph and Hyrum Smith] did, but you can love the Savior as they did. Please open your hearts and feel the Lord’s love for you. Let Him whisper to you how to share that love with His children.”
- Application Idea: Consider what it was about the way Joseph and Hyrum lived their lives that allowed them to develop such love for the Savior. Also, review Elder Kearon’s April 2025 conference talk “Receive His Gift” and our podcast episode covering it.
- Invitation: “To love as Christ loved—’as I have loved you’—is to love the Father best of all, to obey Him to the end, and therein find the divine motivation to love our neighbors as ourselves.”

At least one day per year (though he intimated it should be more frequent), look back and see the pioneers then have that be the lens through which we see the future.
- “To think, as I have been thinking of those pioneers, they did it with vision and perseverance and love. I’m a little emotional about all of this. We’ll have our own perseverance, if you will, to say we’re not going to let those ancestors down. We’re not going to walk away from what they did. I hope they [parade goers] come away stronger and more committed, more proud, in the appropriate sense. Proud of their ancestors. Proud of what the future holds…. It is little enough for at least one day out of the year to look back and to see them, and then have that be the lens through which we see the future.”

Third, there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to sharing the gospel. Each person’s conversion journey is unique. But in every case, the Holy Ghost will bear witness to the truth. - Invitations: Understand and teach others that we all “rely on the mercy and merits of Jesus to attain the level of personal holiness needed for us to enter into the presence of the Father and enjoy eternal life.”
- “It is only through Jesus Christ that the Father’s Plan of Happiness can be realized in the life of any person. We all rely on access to the Savior’s atoning grace to forgive our sins and purify our souls, that is, to justify and sanctify us. We rely on Him for resurrection and immortality. We teach what He has commanded us to do, but we also teach that beyond anything and everything we can do, we necessarily rely on the mercy and merits of Jesus to attain the level of personal holiness needed for us to enter into the presence of the Father and enjoy eternal life.”

- Invitation: “I spoke about [artificial intelligence] issues today at the Religions for Peace World Council Meeting held in Istanbul, Türkiye. I called for religious actors to action in three AI-centered areas which affect faith, ethics, and human dignity. First, be clear, and help society understand, AI is not and cannot be God. No set of utilitarian AI algorithms should determine or speak for our most treasured human values and spiritual experiences. Second, help chart a future where AI genuinely contributes to the common good, including human thriving and common prosperity, for people everywhere. Third, commit together to ensure AI’s moral compass is not dictated solely by technology or the small group developing the technology. All those committed to faith-based morals, ethics, and values are needed in this conversation.”

- Invitation: “We’ve really moved from a position, I think, years ago, of thinking about our differences first … to this wonderful time now where we don’t look for our differences. We celebrate you, and we celebrate your faith and we celebrate your leadership in the community … and we’re so grateful to be with you and to share this experience with you in this beautiful land.”

Clay
- Act on Elder Rasband’s and Elder Renlund’s messages about using our talents. Consider my talents and those I aspire to obtain. Prayerfully think about how I might use them to accomplish God’s work. Sincerely promise God that I’ll do so, make goals and plans for how I’ll do so, and then observe whether He helps me improve my abilities faster than on my own.

- I will follow President Eyring’s pattern. I will identify a question for which I need divine guidance. I will kneel down and ask my Heavenly Father in prayer, wait until an answer comes, and write down what He tells me to do. Throughout the process, I will make sure to focus on Jesus Christ.
